FANTASY FOOTBALL: The Basics

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

On the surface, fantasy football is straightforward: pick a line-up of real NFL players at set positions (mostly QB, RB, WR), and based on how they perform each week, you will either win or lose a match-up against your opponent. And honestly, it is that simple to play. Playing is a lot of fun, so we encourage you to go build a group of friends, family, and co-workers together and start a new league this year.

Once you have that league we are here to show you that playing is fun….but winning is even better! Here at Ring Factory, our tools are designed to help you do just that—-Win your league and Get that CHAMPIONSHIP RING!

To win your league you first must understand the rules that your league will play under. Depending on which site you host your league on (ESPN, Yahoo, Sleeper) They all can have slightly different standard rules and point-scoring systems.

But the most common decisions to make and areas to understand at the start are these:

1. Will your league give points for receptions?

This is called a .5-point PPR (point per reception) or a 1-point PPT league. .5 point is the most common and what we prefer to play. While some leagues don’t offer any points for a reception we don’t encourage that as it eliminates a lot of the fun of the strategy around choosing RBs and WRs.

2. Will your league use a standard roster or something different?

A standard roster consists of the following 9 starters each week:

1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 FLEX, 1 DST, 1 K

Many leagues have made slight variations to this such as:

2 QB Leagues (starting 2 quarterbacks each week)

SuperFlex League (starting 2 players at FLEX, one can be a QB)

Once you have made those basic decisions you are ready to think about drafting and building out your roster. Now go see our next post on Draft Strategy to see how to WIN your league and get that Championship Ring!
